γ-Aminobutyric Acid is an endogenous amino acid neurotransmitter, naturally present in many fermented vegetables, yogurt, kimchi and food supplements. As a naturally occurring non-protein amino acid, it is an important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system of mammals. About 30% of central nervous system synapses use GABA as a transmitter. At present, the main research and application of GABA are focused on pressure relief and sleep aid, and the health claims of the end products on the market basically focus on sleep aid.
In 2009, the Ministry of Health approved γ-aminobutyric acid as a new food material. It is produced by using sodium L-glutamate as raw material through Lactobacillus hilgardi fermentation, heat sterilization, cooling, activated carbon treatment, filtration, addition of blending auxiliary materials (starch), spray drying and other steps. The recommended dosage is ≤500 mg/day.
