  • phycocyanin
    Jul 08, 2019

The phycocyanin is a dark blue powder isolated from spirulina. Mainly found in cyanobacteria, red algae and cryptophyta. The phycocyanin is usually also classified into C-phycocyanin and R-phycocyanin. The former is mainly present in cyanobacteria, while the latter is mainly present in red algae, both of which are present in cryptophyta. Its function is to absorb light (orange) and transmit light energy. It is both a protein and an excellent natural food coloring, as well as a good health food.

The application of phycocyanin is extensive and can be summarized as follows:

    (1) Natural food coloring: phycocyanin is a water-soluble pigment, non-toxic, pure blue, clear and lovely, and can be used as an additive for food coloring agents and cosmetics.

    (2) Medicine and health food: The phycocyanin in vitro experiment has the effect of stimulating the formation of red blood cell colonies, similar to erythropoietin (EPO). A variety of phycocyanin compound drugs have been successfully developed abroad, and the Japanese Kangpai AIDS Research Institute has successfully reported phycocyanin to improve anemia and improve hemoglobin.

In 1982, Iijima et al studied the oral phycocyanin in mice to increase the survival rate of mice injected with liver tumor cells, and the lymphocyte activity of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control. They believed that the protein has immune and anti-disease functions. In 1986, Harvard Hospital of the United States Schwartz and Shklar found that spirulina phycocyanin inhibited some cancer cells.

    (3) Special reagents for biological, chemical and cytological experiments: phycocyanin blue and fluorescent, can be used as some photodynamic research reagents in biology and cytology.

The phycocyanin can help regulate and synthesize many important enzymes required for human metabolism, and it plays an important role in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells and promoting the regeneration of human cells, maintaining the ovaries, and promoting the synthesis of elastin in human body. At the same time, phycocyanin regulates the human body. The immune system enhances the immune system's function and improves the body's resistance to disease. Therefore, phycocyanin is hailed as a “food diamond” by food experts. It has a good effect in the following aspects.
