    Oct 26, 2016

Goji, goji berry or wolfberry is the fruit of Lycium barbarum and Lycium chinense, two closely related species of boxthorn in the nightshade family, Solanaceae. The family also includes the potato, tomato, eggplant, belladonna, chili pepper, and tobacco. The two species are native to Asia.

Wolfberry species are deciduous woody perennial plants, growing 1–3m high. L. chinense is grown in the south of China and tends to be somewhat shorter, while L. barbarum is grown in the north, primarily in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and tends to be somewhat taller.

Main ingredients of goji berries are betaine, atropine, and gyoscyamine.

Lycium barbarum polysaccharide: Lycium barbarum polysaccharide is a water-soluble polysaccharide, the relative molecular mass of 68-200. It is the most active ingredient in Chinese wolfberry and has become a hot research at home and abroad. Among them, the immune regulation of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides and anti-tumor effects of the most. There are many studies have shown that Lycium barbarum polysaccharides have the role of promoting immunity, anti-aging, anti-tumor, free radical scavenging, anti-fatigue, anti-radiation, liver protection, reproductive function protection and improvement.

Betaine: Betaine is one of the main alkaloids of wolfberry fruits, leaves, and handles. Lycium barbarum on lipid metabolism or the role of anti-fatty liver is mainly due to the betaine caused by it in the body from the role of methyl supply. The research on Lycium barbarum is limited to the determination of content, the extraction process and the physiology effect of Lycium barbarum L., the research on the pharmacological effects of Lycium barbarum is very limited.

Lycium pigment: Lycium pigment are the various types of coloring material which present in goji berries, and they are the important physiological active ingredients of wolfberry seeds, mainly including carotene, lutein and other colored substances. Carotenoids in wolfberry is of very important medicinal value. Many studies have proved that wolfberry seed pigment has function of improving human immune, prevention and inhibition of tumor and prevention of atherosclerosis and so on. Carotene is the main active ingredient of Lycium ruthenicum pigment, which has important physiological functions, such as antioxidant and synthesis precursor of vitamin A.
